    Amish Friends from Scratch

Published by Connie Saunders on Apr 04, 2021

I enjoy cooking and most of my cooking is done "from scratch", so I was especially happy to learn about this new cookbook. Wanda E. Brunstetter has gathered recipes from Amish cooks throughout the country and she shares over 270 recipes in this special collection. Recipes ranging from breakfast foods to desserts, snacks, and candy are listed according to their categories, and there are also two indexes that allow you to search by type or by key ingredients. Many delicious food recipes are given, along with recipes for miscellaneous things, such as window cleaner and weed killer, and there's even a section dedicated to substitutions. No sour cream? Substitute plain yogurt. Need sweetened condensed milk for a spur of the moment dessert? Mix sugar, water, and dry powdered milk together, bring to a boil, and then cook for 20 minutes. Who knew? I recommend this Amish Friends from Scratch Cookbook to anyone wanting to make good, wholesome meals with ingredients that are readily available in your pantry. The spiralbound softcover allows it to lay flat as you're using it and there are also stories about growing up in an Amish kitchen. This is a cookbook that you'll want to keep, but it would also be a great gift! I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher but I wasn't obligated to post a favorable review.

    Simply Fantastic!

Published by Staci Kinman on Jan 31, 2021

I love each and every one of Wanda's cookbooks. The photographs are beautiful, every recipe I've made is delicious, and the tidbits about Amish life are so interesting! What I love about this particular cookbook is that the ingredients are all so simple -- and they're often things I already have in my pantry; staples that are basic, simple, and readily available. I have only had this cookbook for a few weeks, and I have already made several of the recipes! My favorite so far is the Garlic Potatoes recipe. My whole family loves them! They're easy enough for every day cooking, yet delicious enough to be a perfect holiday or special meal side dish. In a world where the 'standard American diet' is full of processed convenience foods, this cookbook is a refreshing reminder that made-from-scratch food is still possible and delicious! This is a cookbook I'll reach for again and again. This book was provided to me by Barbour Publishing. I was not required to leave a positive (or any) review. Opinions and ideas expressed in this review are my own.

I love the way this book is laid out.. it was a gift from my wife to me as I am the cook in the family due to her medical condition. The recipes are easy to follow and taste really good.
