The Reluctant Healer of Halifax

The disaster that provides the setting for this story is unknown to most Americans. Characters are well drawn, realistic, and mostly based on real people. Compelling action and characters I really cared about kept me up late at night reading "just one more chapter." This is a book that has stayed with me in the months since I read it. Bravo, Terrie Todd. This author will be on my search list.

The Halifax Explosion shattered almost everything around Pearline, and she kept tending to the pieces. That is what I kept seeing in The Reluctant Healer of Halifax. People were injured. Families were torn apart. Her own grief was enormous. Her brother Benjamin was missing. Her sister stopped speaking. Oliver came home from war carrying wounds of his own. Pearline still kept moving toward people who needed care. She did not have answers for all of it. She prayed. “Lord, You know where Benjamin is. Please lead us to him.” That prayer says so much about the faith in this story. Pearline brings fear to God. She brings grief to Him. She thinks about Jesus. She keeps reaching for Him when she cannot fix what is happening around her. That is exactly the kind of faith I hope to find in Christian fiction. The history made everything heavier because the Halifax Explosion really happened. So many lives were changed in seconds. Terrie Todd lets the full weight of that devastation be felt, while still showing compassion, healing, and people choosing to care for one another in the middle of it. To be the hands and feet of Jesus. Pearline became especially meaningful to me because she kept serving while hurting herself. She kept noticing the person in front of her. An injured stranger. An orphaned child. A family member falling apart. Someone else’s need did not become invisible just because her own heart was breaking. God’s faithfulness runs through this story quietly and steadily. That is the kind of Christian fiction I love. Jesus, prayer, and dependence on God are woven into how these people live through suffering and keep turning to Him. This one hurt … and this one gave hope. I am a history nerd, so how have I never known about the horrifying event that prompted this story? The Reluctant Healer of Halifax chronicles the terror occurring in Nova Scotia in December 1917, and the far-reaching consequences that followed. It's obvious that author Terrie Todd devoted many hours to researching The Great Halifax Explosion, but this book is much more than facts on a page. Her mesmerizing words catapulted me into the chaos of that ship's explosion and swept me along with the trauma and life-changing repercussions. Engaging characters and a troubled romance kept me turning the pages, but the real engagement came from the poignant emotions and inspiring displays of resiliency.
