"Her senses turned to sickening dread when she found herself looking into the steel barrel of a Winchester .44. Glancing above the ominous man's head to the cold, starless Utah night, Casey tasted bitter, gut-wrenching fear."If you enjoy a good western, these lines from DiAnn Mill's first chapter have your attention.
Casey O'Hare and her brother, unwilling tag-a-longs of the Davis Jenkins gang, have a bounty on their heads. In a desperate attempt to find freedom and a new start, Casey escapes from Jenkins and right into the sights of Morgan's .44---held by a man whose personal grief and rage have turned him into a most dangerous bounty hunter.
Casey's determination to shed her past and build a new life takes on courageous and spirited forms which build into a risky climax. As she finds a real God to put her trust in, she recognizes the answers to her life-long dream, but not before some amazing people come into her life.
DiAnn Mills spins a riveting Western tale full of conflict and uncertainty, danger and hope. LEATHER AND LACE has a great beginning and I devoured the beginning chapters, captivated by the strong new voice in character and plot development. I was somewhat surprised by the change in style further into the story.
Mills excelled in her riveting portrayal of time, place, and conflict as she led me through the unfolding of her tale. Later in the book, Mills' style changed, which led to some confusion, and diluting of the powerful beginning. Nevertheless, LEATHER AND LACE was an enjoyable read, full of people the reader hates to say good-bye to at the end. I hope Mills brings Morgan and Casey back, with future adventures.
