Landon Snow and The Island of Arcanum, Book Three
By R.K. Mortenson. 2006, Young Adult Fantasy, ISBN: 1597893587, Barbour Publishing

This new episode in the Landon Snow fantasy adventure series continues an excellent, young adult narrative similar to the Chronicles of Narnia. In book three, 12-year-old Landon, and his sisters, twins Holly and Bridget, travel to the Island of Arcanum – the time, Noah’s Ark. This time they battle Malus Quidam and the dark, terrifying evil shadow that holds captive the animals from Wonderwood.

Their magical adventures begin with a visit to their grandparents and the town’s mysterious library where they expect the Book of Meaning to flip its pages so the adventure can begin again. These adventures include talking books, secret passageways, caves, and a pirate ship filled with magical creatures, plus riding the high seas on an elegant ship.

Although this was my first Landon Snow title, it won’t be my last. I recommend the books by read in order even though touted as stand-alone titles. Mortenson returns the sense of magic to story telling and his delightful series will enchant upper elementary school age children and be an excellent alternative to the Potter series.
