Bible 101 for StudentsStephen Miller Helps Students Prepare for the Test of Life
Between classes, homework, athletics, friends, family, activities, church involvement, jobs, and the like, there's not much time to spare. In fact, ask a student about what books they’ve been reading lately and you might get a blank stare.
"Reading a book is not a high priority for students—unless they'll be tested on it," says best-selling author Stephen Miller. "Even then, they prefer used books, already highlighted with the main points. . .Life is a test. There's one book more than any other that prepares us for that test."
To help students better understand life's guidebook — the Bible — and discover what it has to say about many of the issues they're facing on a daily basis, Miller developed The Student’s Guide to the Bible (Barbour Publishing, April 2008), "a collection of all the highlighted parts of the Bible — the good parts that will be on the test."
In the first half of the book, Miller tackles several contemporary life issues important to students and directs them to key Bible passages in "Where to Find it in the Bible." To ensure that the topics covered would be relevant to what students wonder about, Miller conducted several focus groups with Christian high school and college students, basing the list on their feedback. Topics covered range from abortion to living together to body piercings, dating, homosexuality, and success.
Miller then takes students on an in-depth tour of each book of the Bible in "Sixty-Six Books—The Short Course." For each book, he offers a short summary; investigates the who, what, when, where, and why; highlights the most famous quote or verse; describes the biggest scene that takes place in the book; and pulls out one or two of the book's biggest ideas.
As an added bonus, Miller has compiled a list of "Fifty Bible Heroes and Jerks." Men like Amos, David, and Daniel are given hero status while Jonah, Eve, Jezebel, and the like get the thumbs-down. Full-color illustrations and photos sprinkled throughout bring each book of the Bible to life and help students visually understand the concepts. The book also includes an extensive index.
