In 1814 New Orleans it's not unusual for rich pillars of society to have affairs with their slaves or colored mistresses. Such is the case of the parentage of Isabelle Gayarre, a beautiful loved and precious young woman, but, because of the races rules, a slave. Isabelle seeks her freedom by stowing aboard THE JUDE, Josica Carter's ship. She's headed for her half-sister Emilie's where she dreams of finding freedom. However, one disaster after another, attacks Captain Carters ship, and one event leaves them wounded and stranded in the Florida Keys. Isabelle is initially taken aback at the Captain's somewhat harsh behavior, but then she is drawn to him, and he to her. There is no doubt these two are meant to be...but the questions will they be?, and how will they be? Hover over them.
I've long been a fan of Kathleen Y'Barbo's writing and Beloved Castaway is no exception. The only trouble I had with the book was getting into the story. I think it may have been more my life situation/head case thinking than her writing though. Once past the prologue and used to the rhythm of the language in which she writes (period English) I was completely in the moment with Isabelle and Josiah. Kathleen is masterful at two things especially: setting and dialogue. Her books always takes me to the place and time and folk of her stories.
